Jamaica, a popular tourist destination, is less well-known for being the second poorest nation in the Caribbean. Its struggle with poverty has prompted our support of local initiatives aimed at care for vulnerable populations (most often children, youth, and individuals with special needs).

The Need

In the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, the Bahamas continues to rebuild. Displaced families, closed schools, and ruined businesses are beginning to return and reopen. Our partner church aims to reach children and young adults who’ve experienced the trauma of the hurricane and share with them the HOPE and security that can only be found in Christ.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a HOPE Initiative?

A HOPE Initiative is a project or program that is designed to offer HOPE to individuals and communities. Often, Bold Hope partners with missionaries and local churches in these efforts, coming alongside their long-term vision to provide financial and physical support.

Which immunizations should I get prior to my trip?

Consult your doctor or a travel medicine specialist before your trip and visit www.cdc.gov/travel for information on recommended immunizations, medical precautions, and how to handle prescriptions while traveling internationally. We advise all volunteers, at a minimum, to be up-to-date on routine vaccines.

Do I need trip insurance?

Bold Hope purchases trip insurance for all volunteers, which is included in your trip cost. Additional insurance is not required. Note: this does not cover flight or trip cancellations.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. Your passport should be valid at least 6 months past your dates of travel.

I am under the age of 18. Am I able to come on a trip?

Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or must know someone on the trip that would be willing to act as their temporary guardian for the duration of the trip. If you are traveling as part of a youth group, you automatically fall under the temporary guardianship of the youth leaders that are traveling with the group.

How much money should I bring? Do I need to exchange currency?

U.S. dollars are widely accepted. We recommend bringing small bills. Most volunteers bring between $50 and $250. It is best to separate your money and carry it in different locations, such as your pocket, wallet, and suitcase. If there is a need to exchange currency, our ministry partners on the ground will assist you with that process.

Can I raise support for my trip? How does it get applied to my trip cost?

Yes. Everyone who signs up will have their own personal online fundraiser (think GoFundMe). After personalizing the fundraiser, send out your unique fundraising link to your friends and family via email, social media, etc. Any funds that come in through that link will automatically be applied to your trip.

What if I have to back out of a trip after signing up?

All trip prices include a $100 non-refundable, non-transferable trip reservation fee. Should you choose to cancel your trip, this money will be retained by Bold Hope. Any other funds that we are unable to recover are also non-refundable.

What if Bold Hope cancels a trip?

In the event that Bold Hope has to cancel a trip (e.g., if a hurricane hits the country), the organization will only refund the money that it is able to recover. For example, if the airline does not refund the money paid for plane tickets, Bold Hope will refund everything except for airfare. If a trip is canceled by Bold Hope, participants will receive a refund for anything we were able to recover.

If I sponsor a child/youth do I receive the trip discount?

No, trip discounts are only given to monthly donors whose donations go towards admin. Child sponsorship goes entirely towards the care of the child (education, meals, medical care, clothing, shoes, etc…), so allocating a portion of it towards a discount on the trip would take away from the full monies going toward the child.

What is the $100 first payment?

This first payment reserves your spot and indicates to us that you plan to participate. It also allows us to get started planning your mission trip. This deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, and for tax purposes is not a donation. Therefore it is not tax-deductible. When you receive your tax donation paperwork at the end of the year it will not include this deposit as a donation.

What is the monthly donor discount?

We offer a monthly donor discount off of trip costs for donors who partner with Bold Hope. Discount: $30/month = $450 discount, $50/month = $750 discount. You can sign up to become a partner here, “Become a Bold Hope Partner
